The term 'Forced outage' as it applies to the area of energy can be defined as ' The shutdown of a generating unit, transmission line, or other facility for emergency reasons or a condition in which the generating equipment is unavailable for load due to unanticipated break-down'.

The term 'Forced outage' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' Unscheduled shut down of a generating unit or other facility for emergency or other unforeseen reasons'.
